In the matter of the application of Zachariah Alban for service Pension Act March 9 1878 No. 33,236

Personally came before me a Clerk of the Circuit court in and for aforesaid County and State Zachariah Alban , said applicant,
citizen of union Meeting House county of Baltimore State of Maryland,
well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declare in relation to aforesaid case, as follows:

That the inquiry in enclosed circular of April 5th why he signed the receipt rolls in 1814 of his company by mark and now appears to sign his declaration for Pension in full is explained as follows:

That he had not received any education and had not learned how to write at the time that he was in the service in 1814.

That about three or four years after he was in the service aforesaid in 1814 he went to school to an Irish school teacher named John Gregory and with him learned for the first time how to write and consequently he was able to write his name and had to make his mark in signing the receipt rolls of his company and that he did sign his declaration for pension.
